The making of Russian fairy tales
by Dr. Julia Zarankin November 4th, 2009
Russian culture is inextricably tied to its folk tradition and, in particular, to the magic of the fairy tale world. We will explore Russian fairy tales such as "Vassilisa the Beautiful' and "Koschei the Deathless" (or immortal) two of the best known fairy tale characters – seen below. Stories and images such as these can reflect a cultures's aesthetic and psychological values. Though fairy tales have existed for centuries as an integral part of Russia's oral tradition, they were not assembled and published until the 1860s, during the rise of nationalism and the emancipation of the serfs. We will consider the cultural context surrounding the emergence of fairy tales as an official genre.

Fairy Tale Transformations by Dr. Julia Zarankin
November 18th, 2009
Russian art forms immediately seized upon the power, vivid imagery and life lessons of the fairy tale universe. Literature, visual arts, orchestral music, opera, ballet, architecture, poster art and display – illuminating – and often subversive – examples of
fairy tale transformations. We will trace the enduring influence of such illustrious and haunting characters as Tolstoy's "Ivan the Fool" (below left) and the witch "Baba Yaga" (below right) on 19th and 20th Russian creative imaginations.
